I Feel Like I Shouldn't Like DBZ

Someone said something recently that had me thinking:

"If DBZ has sloppy writing and shallow characters, then what redeeming factors does it have other than pure nostalgia?"

The more I think about it, the more I see how DBZ pretty much sticks the middle finger to the "textbook definition" of a good show/manga. It also doesn't help how DBZ is nothing more than a laughing stock amongst the more "hardcore" anime fans who've seen shows with exceptional writing and character depth.

I love DBZ, but I feel like I shouldn't. If it doesn't bother with having factors that are generally considered to be what make a show good in the first place, then why should I love it as much as I do?

Meh. I honestly don't care what others think. DBZ is still a pretty popular mainstream anime, especially in Japan. That's why there's always movies and specials being made. The "hardcore" anime fans may find it "sloppy writing and shallow characters", but to the casual viewers like myself, it's a pretty damm entertaining show. I'm pretty sure DBZ is more widely recognized than most of those supposed better animes "with exceptional writing and character depth".

While I don't disagree with the critcism, DBZ is an action anime, so the fights ought to be considered. If the action is good, then this bad show is at least an entertaining bad show. You can still enjoy the show while acknowledging its flaws. And poorly written characters can still come off as "cool." Think of it like a mindless action film if you want. Critically speaking, can such a film be called good? Probably not. But is it still fun? Probably so.

For me the original Dragonball Anime is the most memorable, from time to time, i still watch some of the great fights in DB, but rarely watch any of the dbz fights.

For me personally I think it is mostly the nostalgia aspect of Dragonball that keeps me interested in it. I was only a kid when I first watched it so the lack of character depth really didn't bother me back then.. I think we all just watched it for the epic (and extremely long) fights. If I was to watch it now for the first time ever, at the age of 22, I doubt I would find it anywhere near as appealing. I guess nostalgia is a powerful thing :)

U like DBZ, cool. U hate it, cool. Its all up to ur opinion.

I've seen many seasoned anime fans who consider DBZ as nothin more than entry-level fare, even in this Forum itself.

What they fail to realize is bad-mouthing or criticizing DBZ just for the sake of promoting their beloved Anime or Favourite Character isn't gonna change the fact that those anime merely improvised & implemented DBZ concepts.

I've watched a ton of anime. Shounen to Seinen.

Still regard DragonBall as superior entertainment show. Not one bit of nostalgic factor applied.

Toriyama being an "accidental genius" that he created a fictional family, loved by everyone even today is nothin short of all-time classic.

It's entertaining with the fights and some of the other scenes, but I do think most of the criticism is justified. The textbook definition of this kind of stuff is rather biased though IMO, so I'd just watch it if you like and if you don't, then don't.

That's exactly how I feel about DBZ.
I don't know why, but I love the show. I don't like it for nostalgia reasons, because I only watched it when I was 11. Now I'm 15.

I used to love DBZ and think it was the best thing ever.
It was only when I got into other things that are miles better (like one piece) did I notice all the flaws.
For fights and stuff its okay i suppose (still plenty of series that are better in this aspect) but it gets beaten in almost everything else.

Your logic seems to be only a result of boredom!

That is just like saying for example why watch "The Terminator" since of course everything now a days is so called "better" since we have CGI and such.

But no, Terminator is a classic, and that is just one example, I have never watched many of the old movies before so there is no "nostalgia" involved in it and yet I still find im enjoying older films better.

Fact of the matter is, Dragonball Z IS a classic, at the time there was nothing else quite like it, and sure maybe newer animes can do things better than DBZ can but there are many different reasons why its still loved today, maybe people like the fact that it looks like its actually drawn instead of newer animes being done on computers, maybe they like the character designs better? The formula just works, for me and many others, the characters are all likable, the animation style is awesome, the show keeps you interested (Minus the filler) the fight scenes are great, tons of funny moments, and im not alone in this!

Sure every show has negative things about it but to you going so far as saying you feel like you shouldnt be watching dragonball z because other things can be made better is ridiculous

I can agree some of it is nostalgia but I have just watched it reccently all again and I can say even if I didnt watch it since I was 11 (im 23 now) I would still enjoy it.

"Gentlemen, you can't fight in here! This is the war room!"

The fact that Dragon Ball is a landmark series, and is the measuring stick to which all other Shonen anime is measured against should be reason enough to like it. Astroboy set the basic structure of a modern Shonen series, but Dragon Ball really set the standard for what it should be like.

You can't find a successful anime currently that didn't have some inspiration from Dragon Ball, whether it would be inspired from story telling style or art. Period.

So anyone that says you shouldn't like Dragon Ball is an idiot who clearly doesn't understand how Shonen manga/anime works.

Liking Shonen anime/manga without liking Dragon Ball is like liking Heavy Metal without liking Black Sabbath. It's an insult to the genre.

Your personal quest for perfection would be endless, my friend.

DBZ was once the King.

Now, One-Piece does better than DBZ, so you chose OP.

In Future, another new series surpasses OP in every other term, then you prefer that.

Nothing is perfect. NOTHING.

Each has their flaws, but only that DBZ actually has slight edge in terms of likable characters.

Even the glorious DN suffers frm likeable/interesting character apart frm Main 2 lead.

DBZ/Akira Toriyama on the other hand, introduced us a whole new family that fans have grown to appreciate & love.

You can like something inspired by something else without liking the original work. Just because something had influence doesn't necessarily mean that it's aged well or is automatically good. You can't deny it's influence, but you can deny its quality if you want to.
